About Rebecca Spencer

Rebecca created the role of Madame Giry in the new $35 million production of Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular, under the direction of Harold Prince. Her acclaimed performances at the Venetian Hotel and Casino continued for over two years. A review in the Las Vegas Review Journal noted: “There's lots of talent on display at 'Phantom -- The Las Vegas Spectacular,' but the person I can never stop watching is Rebecca Spencer”. The role returned Rebecca to the haunts of the Paris Opera House, fifteen years after her debut as Carlotta, performed in German for six months at the Neue Flora Theatre in Mr. Prince’s Hamburg, Germany Company. As an early collaborator, Rebecca was an original Broadway cast member of Jekyll and Hyde and created the role of Emma Carew in the Alley Theatre world premiere, a role she had the opportunity to revisit on Broadway ten years later. She was an original company member of the Toronto workshop production of Ragtime, directed by Frank Galati. Rebecca has performed principal roles in over 50 opera, national tour, regional and Off-Broadway productions ranging from Cunegonde in Bernstein’s Candide to Dolly Levi in Jerry Herman’s Hello Dolly. Rebecca has been nominated for theatre critic’s awards across the country, from Florida to Arizona. Her television credits include Third Watch and Law and Order: SVU. She has performed in concert as a guest soloist with the Syracuse, New Haven and Detroit Symphonies, and the Florida Orchestra, the Indianapolis and Naples Symphonies conducted by Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops, and as the guest soloist for composer Marvin Hamlisch. In New York she has been featured at Lyrics and Lyricists and as well as the Ira Gershwin Centennial at Carnegie Hall, recorded for PBS. She most recently debuted at the venerable Birdland Jazz Club and has appeared in five Encores! concerts at the City Center. She was featured at the Mabel Mercer Foundation’s 2004 & 05 NYC Cabaret Conventions. In Las Vegas, she conceived the script for the 2007 Liberace Piano Competitions and co-hosted the international competition. She was also a monthly performer in the Las Vegas Composer’s Showcase. Rebecca was awarded the 2004 BackStage Bistro Award for her debut solo recording, Wide Awake and Dreaming. Her second recording, Fair Warning, was released in March 2006. She is the Executive Producer for her recordings with producer, pianist and conductor, Philip Fortenberry. Both CDs are marketed on the LML Music label, distributed by Allegro Music. Her live concert performances, based on these collaborations and repertoire, continue to receive critical acclaim. In 2009, Rebecca was featured on the cover of the international encyclopedic publication 400 Years of Entertainment, Music and Show Biz, compiled by musicologist, Maximillion DeLayfette. She has recorded for numerous record labels ranging from Broadway First Cast albums to collectable compilations. Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Ithaca College with an emphasis on classical vocal performance. Sought after as a Teaching Artist, her Master Classes have been taught at Southern Methodist University, Ithaca College, and the Governor’s School For The Arts in Norfolk, VA, among others. She was the assistant director to NY Director, Richard Sabellico, for Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town, and most recently was the Creative Consultant for a concert at the Moore Theatre in Seattle featuring collaboration between the Broadway Bound Children’s Theatre and the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Rebecca chooses to utilize a diverse repertoire derived from the leading composers and lyricists of Broadway, the American Art Song and the American Songbook. While in performance, she continues to participate, whenever possible, in education outreach and talk backs.
